Colton Lance

I'm the owner and river captain at Champion Springs pursuit, a family man with three daughters, and one amazing wife. Hunting, fishing, and the outdoors have always been a big part of my life. With a passion for the outdoors, I encourage others to get out and reap the rewards that the land and streams provide. Myself, and my deck hand, are experienced in the sport of gigging fish. Since I was 8 years old I've been on the boat, this makes it a family tradition to me. I had many memory filled evenings on the river with my family all together, it was merely a family reunion. My Uncle, along with my cousins and I, would gig the fish and bring them back to the bank where my Grandmother had a pot of hot oil boiling. We would quickly clean the fish while the others would have a cherry fire crackling before we were finished, others would slice potatoes and make hushpuppies. They were the best times! I started Champion Springs Pursuit because I'm passionate about gigging fish, and when I think of gigging, I think of family, friends, and great times. I want to share this with you! And for this to be an experience you find enjoyment in, that you cherish the moment so much you'll bring it home, pass along the skills, and continue the family tradition. My goal is that you take it upon yourself to go out and gig, making memories with your loved ones in this sport.

Explore an Ozark Tradition

Join us for an unforgettable experience; as we explore breathtaking rivers of Missouri, using alternative methods for harvesting fish. Our guided fishing charter is designed to provide you with an immersive experience, allowing you to connect with nature. During the gigging season the rivers are vast, this allows you to escape daily life, while you spear fish under the night sky. We use 12-16ft long fiberglass poles with a gig at its end; the gig is similar to a trident. Whether you are new to the sport, or a seasoned gigger, we welcome you on this thrilling adventure with us!

Your Safety Matters

Safety is our top priority. Our boat is equipped with life jackets, a medical kit, and safety blankets. While the river itself can produce hazards; our experienced guides are equipped to handle any situation, allowing you to enjoy your trip without any worries.

Where It Began

My great Grandfather, Kenneth Rutter, and great Grandmother, Opal Rutter, raised 8 boys and 1 girl in this home. If the walls could talk they would speak unbelievable stories of their American dream during the days of the pioneer; they would speak touching stories of love, and what it meant to be a family in many aspects. It was the man of the house, Kenneth, who brought the gigging tradition alive in our family in the 1900's. The methods he used are much different than todays modern methods; he used a stick with a single barbed spear at its end, a  piece of rubber was tied to the throwing end, and then tied to his wrist. The kids would wade into the river with him; wielding oil lanterns to illuminate the water, he would then throw the gig at the fish and jerk his arm back, this would send the gig retracting back towards him creating a retrieving-like gig method.
